There is some confusion about the role of certifying partners and the Workers Compensation Board in Alberta. There used to be about 14 certifying partners. The certifying partners were responsible for the Certificate of Recognition Program which is a partnership between Occupational health and safety, Workers Compensation Board, which supplies the rebates, and industry. The certifying partners are responsible for maintaining external auditors lists and for training internal and external auditors. They also have many courses, Safety Vantage is the AASP’s courses. AFPA, Alberta Food Processors has courses, as does ACSA, Alberta Construction Safety Association.
All certifying partners have courses that you must take in order to join their auditing program and receive rebates on your WCB premiums of between five to 20 percent. Five percent is automatic once you’ve achieved core. The first time you’re going for core you get a 10 percent rebate on your WCB premiums because there is a cost to establishing a health and safety system and this offsets it somewhat. The premiums can be plowed back into enhancing your health and safety program so you have synergistic effects from making your workplace safer and building on it.
