1018KBSyncrude is a important Canadian energy company dedicated to turning vast reserves of oil sand into usable energy. As a due diligence auditor, Purcell audits Syncrude's transportation clients to determine if they can provide the level of safety the company demands. As the prime contractor, Syncrude needs to ensure that the contractors that operate on their site function in a very safe and conscientious manner. It is an honour to be on the company's Qualified Carriers list, because only the best meet their criteria. Over and above the role of auditing through examining their documentation, observing their site and interviewing their representatives, we try make the often rigorous task of auditing easier by brining to their attention to valuable new technologies or processes. One good example is Drive Cam technology, which has been proven to reduce incidents, accidents and insurance costs by 63 percent.
Costco, the huge global retailer, has been a Purcell client for nine years. During that time, we have helped this extremely employee-conscious company demonstrate its concern for the health and well-being of its employees. We constantly strive to provide the latest and most cost-effective methods to help the company gain its Certificate of Recognition. Because we have successfully performed audits for the retailer, the company is now able to simply maintain the process by implementing action plans developed from previous audits. Following our instructions, employees can fill them out and send the necessary paperwork to the Certifying Partner. This has substantially reduced their auditing costs and involved their employees in conducting and measuring the company's excellent Health and Safety Management system. Our goal is always to maximize employee involvement in the process, because the people closest to the process are most likely to uncover any deficiencies.
For client Save-on-Foods, a Western Canadian grocer referred by Costco Purcell teamed with another excellent auditor who enhances our skill-set. Diligent and detail orientated, he caught an engineering flaw which the company had previously missed. We have provided them with very inexpensive copies of legislation and alerted them to the latest developments in emergency planning, including plans for evacuating the public in a timely and efficient manner. This is especially important when dealing with people with disabilities that involve hearing (the senses), movement (mobility issues) and cognitive functions (reasoning). We also work to help the company strive to remain current with the latest technology and trends, thus giving it a competitive advantage.
Purcell designed a behaviour-based safety program for Jomax Drilling, a contractor to the oil industry specializing in deep drilling. We designed a peer-based system because the more people involved in the process, the more effective the system. Purcell trained the company's human resource manager and rig manager/safety person to use very simple methods to train employees in effective peer coaching, because it's important to employ simple method in difficult environments, with conditions like temperatures dropping to minus-50 degrees Fahrenheit. Purcell custom-designed the program to fit Jomax's corporate culture, and continues to analyze results to maximize the ongoing effectiveness of the program. This system has effectively reduced their accident and injury rates, resulting in commendation from an important client.
