Most people get confused between a health and safety audit and an inspection.

Basically, an inspection is done to monitor the status of health and safety hazards in the workplace. You walk around. You check over, under, around. You check workers to see if they’re working safely and following the rules. It gives you a snapshot of how your company is doing.

Whereas an audit looks at the health and safety management system in place, it examines documentation, you interview the employees with a representative sample, and you observe the site, which, just like a medical checkup, gives you the strengths and also the opportunities for improvement for your health and safety management system.

Inspections may be part of an audit, but an audit is not part of an inspection.
